How much do you care about people finding your company through search engines?
For me, it’s a lot.
It’s hard not to love search traffic.
As long as you continue to rank, you get “free” traffic. If your website is good at converting visitors to clients, that means more clients without much extra work.
Of course, one of the biggest ranking factors is having great links pointing back to your site.
To get more links, some people run link-building campaigns or pay another agency to generate them.
But the best way I have found is to have a permanent link-building mindset. If you’re always on the look out for opportunities, you start identifying them EVERYWHERE.

  • Going on a podcast? Ask them to link to a specific post you want ranked
  • Doing an interview? Work in resources on your own site
  • Writing guest posts? Work in the right anchor text that you want to rank for
I’ve even started asking business friends if they’d be OK to link to us from their existing content.
There’s usually something in it for them like a mention on our site, but often people are just happy to link to good resources. That’s especially true if they know you.
Another reason why relationships are so important.
Another example - last week I received a newsletter with a similar message to this one I’m writing now.
I replied and offered a link. We’re already forming a relationship and will get some mentions & links in her upcoming guest posts.
I bring this up is because link building seems scary or unachievable to lots of business owners.
But if you
  1. Cultivate the right mindset so that you easily spot opportunities
  2. Lean on your existing relationships to generate links
it can be pretty simple.
